Ramblings: Why make a complicated game?
This is a question I keep asking myself. It is a question more sensible people will direct at me, and advice against doing.
There are a few times in my life when I felt like I had to pursue a particular path, and this is one of them. My previous efforts to create a photorealistic CG Earth also took me to similar extremes (long hours of research, development and testing), yielding little in return except the realization that I couldn't reach my initial goal. But I also gained the satisfaction of being able to help some others who were trying to do the same thing as I did.
JFK said it best: "We choose to go to the Moon... and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard", "we set sail on this new sea because there is new knowledge to be gained".
Right now I want to make a RPG. Even though it's a very scaled-down, mini RPG, I aim to give it all the characteristics that I had always wished for in a RPG.
That said, it's almost never smooth sailing. The more I progress, the more I realize what little I know and what further knowledge and skills I still need to learn in order to continue. There's still a long way to go, and I must take every opportunity to give thanks to the support, understanding and feedback of my family and friends.
People say it's the journey that matters, not the destination. Hopefully one day soon, before I succumb to the necessities of "real life", I will have the ability to create something worthy of sharing with the world.
